Who Are We

Sometimes good things have to come to an end, and that is the case with the Coyote Point Museum Auxiliary. It is with great sadness that the Auxiliary has determined that, after 55 years as a vital and energetic organization of women dedicated to contributing to the support of the Coyote Point Museum, the time has come to step back and encourage others to become involved in the activities and fund raising aspects of the Museum.

Many will remember with fondness the 36 Decorators’ Show Houses, the first one the Brawner Estate in 1957 and the last one a Mark Hopkins Family Mansion in 2005. The supreme effort came with the Carolands show house in 1991– open for six weeks and netting one million dollars for the Museum. Over the years the Auxiliary has raised over $5 million as a result of those Show Houses, plus more than a decade of bridge tournaments, many luncheons and fashion shows and several golf tournaments. For over 20 years the Auxiliary managed, purchased and staffed The Store at the Museum, realizing more profits for the Museum. The community has enjoyed 27 years of Gingerbread House contests, and Toddler Tuesday continues to be a favorite – all projects of the Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary members are proud of all their accomplishments. In the beginning, in 1953, they conducted classes for pre-school children, helped with exhibits and collection work, and acted as docents for the exhibit and wildlife collections. The Auxiliary became the chief financial support of the Museum and was instrumental in the move to help finance and build a new environmental museum to replace the old World War II surplus buildings at Coyote Point. The long-awaited new Coyote Point Museum opened on May 18, 1981 with its one-of-a-kind permanent exhibit “The Place Called San Mateo”.

The Auxiliary members, as a group, will miss their close relationship with the Coyote Point Museum, but will continue to be loyal supporters individually as the Museum continues to grow and prosper.
