Suzman & Cole Design Associates was retained to design a historically appropriate garden. A newly designed entrance, which includes a formal entry gate opening onto the elliptical auto court, established the strong symmetrical relationship to the original structure. The classic beauty expressed by the family mansion is reinforced and com plemented by the twin palms framing the drive, sited within the lawn adjacent to the ellipse and providing a sense of graciousness. The existing trees, which include her itage live oaks, palms, locusts, and other deciduous trees, provide privacy. Evergreen shrubs augment these existing plantings. Specimen cream-flowering magnolias flank the front portico, beneath which are twin parterres. The overall emphasis of the front garden is spring flowering plants, with a predominance of white and cream blossoms to complement the white house exterior.

The young man who bunks here dreams of the era when this gracious home was built and tall ships sailed the high seas. The designers carried out the nautical theme refin-ishing the aged wood floors with non-toxic stains and finishes and stenciled golden stars on a blue and sepia checkerboard pattern. When homework assignments call for reading, he gets comfy in his window seat. A desk is placed under the brick wall and is accented with galvanized metal bulletin boards to keep track of this young man’s busy schedule. The new theater design is a stage-set design using the “savana motifs” of the late 1890’s that goes so well with the Georgian Mansion. The full color murals create mood and drama and add depth to an otherwise small windowless room. The use of trompe l’oeil murals can be used in any room to increase both beauty and depth of space as demonstrated in this savanna stage set from the past.

“Réflexion du Vigne”
A decidedly modern, sophisticated and highly stylized spin on the traditional concept of the “wine cellar.” Designers, highly skilled artisans, and fine artists have successfully synthesized a play on “Réflexion” where floors reflect ceilings, mirrors reflect moods, crystals reflect images and, ultimately, Narcissus reflects himself. Could there be a more sumptuous cocoon in which to ponder?

These three rooms have been designed for a modern intelligent family where comfort and convenience are essential. My design celebrates the architecture by respecting the scale and proportion of each of the spaces, making sure they complement one another while allowing each to maintain its own distinct character. With that in mind, it was my intention to create spaces emphasizing antiques, contemporary art, and a sophisticated color palette.
